Kristen Stewart appears on HBO's Season Finale of Irma Vep

"We talked about furniture!" Vikander tells EW of the frequent Olivier Assayas collaborator joining her for a cameo on the HBO miniseries finale. Sometimes, while reaching deep into the soul to extract the deepest emotions of the human psyche, you just need a good chat about ottomans.

Alicia Vikander and writer-director Olivier Assayas welcomed Kristen Stewart into the fold for a brief cameo on Monday's Irma Vep miniseries finale, and, despite playing with heavy material, the stars cleansed their palettes with lighter conversation.

"I remember we talked about furniture!" Vikander tells EW, adding that she and the Spencer star were both "finish[ing] up our homes" between shooting, and didn't bog themselves down with analyzing Irma Vep's heavy thematics between takes. "That's a deep subject, I don't know if we really got there. I adore her, she's so cool. I'm an admirer of the work she's done, especially the work she's done with Olivier. It was wonderful that she came and wanted to be part of this little film. She brought a happy energy, and it goes with the sense that Olivier creates in general, being where he is in his career. He just brings super talented, inspiring people that he's closer friends with. It's a communal, friendly vibe every day."

The Oscar-winning Danish Girl and Tomb Raider actress leads the series as Mira, an A-list movie starlet traveling to France to film a remake of Louis Feuillade's 1915 silent film Les Vampires in the role of villainess Irma Vep. The film serves as a meta meditation on Assayas' own career, and itself is a pseudo remake of his 1996 Irma Vep movie starring his ex-wife, Maggie Cheung.

Before boarding Irma Vep for one episode, Stewart appeared in the prestigious French director's 2015 drama Clouds of Sils Maria — for which she won the Cesar Award for Best Supporting Actress — and his 2017 supernatural drama Personal Shopper.

In the series, she portrays Lianna, a pop star romantically involved with Mira's former lover, Eamonn, who's also in Paris to shoot a Hollywood blockbuster. The singer pops by on a break from her world tour after the couple suffers a miscarriage.

"I think that was always what Olivier had in mind," Vikander says of Assayas bringing Stewart aboard, even briefly, as the Twilight performer's own career and personal life reportedly inspired elements of the character of Mira. "He knew it was a small part and they know each other very well, but it was more about writing it though he didn't know if she'd say yes to come and join us."

Crimes of The Future makes the best horror movies list of 2022

 

David Cronenberg’s latest foray into body horror was, strangely, less disgusting than advertised, but far more tied to the legend’s other inhuman quirks than could have been predicted. The lightly-sketched plot involves Viggo Mortensen as a man who grows extra organs in a ruined-Earth future, where his partner (Léa Seydoux) surgically removes them for captive audiences. Things become complicated once the government starts to get involved, and we’re introduced to a world of superfans (including a wacky Kristen Stewart), assassins and children who eat plastic trash cans. Cronenberg keeps the proceedings as cold and clinical as his characters, with long stretches of dialogue accentuating the gloss of artificiality that is as fascinating as it is alienating. Those who can dip into Cronenberg’s wavelength will be richly rewarded.

Dave Franco, Ed Harris, Katy O'Brian and Jena Malone join Kristen Stewart in Love Lies Bleeding for A24

EXCLUSIVE: Katy O’Brian, Dave Franco, Ed Harris and Jena Malone have joined Kristen Stewart and Anna Baryshnikov in Love Lies Bleeding with A24 and Film4 teaming on the pic. Rose Glass will direct from a script she co-wrote with Weronika Tofilska.

The film is described as a romance fueled by ego, desire and the American Dream.

A24 will produce alongside Andrea Cornwell for Lobo Films and Oliver Kassman for Escape Plan Productions. Film4 developed the film alongside the filmmakers and will co-finance with A24, which will handle the global release of the film. Production starts this week.

Franco is coming off his scene-stealing role in the hit Apple series The Afterparty. On the film side, he has the Netflix vampire pic Day Shift up next, co-starring opposite Jamie Foxx. He also recently made his directorial debut on the 2021 thriller The Rental.

This marks O’Brian’s first major film role. Her credits include recurring roles on The Mandalorian, The Walking Dead, The Rookie and Black Lightning.

Harris can currently be seen on the HBO series Westworld, which had its fourth season premiere on Sunday. He is onscreen in Top Gun: Maverick, which passed the $1 billion worldwide box office milestone over the weekend. Malone can be seen starring opposite Billy Bob Thornton in the final season of Amazon Prime’s Goliath.

Kristen Stewart mentions author Lidia Yuknavitch in the NY Times and her new movie The Chronology of Water

The actress Kristen Stewart calls herself a “pseudo-student” of Yuknavitch’s, and flew to Oregon “with very sweaty hands” to meet the writer after reading “The Chronology of Water” on a film set. In the five years since, she has spent time with Yuknavitch’s family.

“She has opened up to me in full. I wish I knew her in so many stages of her life,” Stewart wrote in an email, adding that her mentorship has “changed or at least helped shape my relationship with expression itself. Not a small thing.” (Yuknavitch feels similarly, saying she believes the two have “a kindred art link.”)

Later this year, Stewart will direct the film adaptation of “The Chronology of Water,” which she also wrote. Yuknavitch is a story consultant on the project.

“Traditional structure was something that I always felt would ruin how uniquely true it feels,” Stewart said. “So it has been tricky!”
